Wine Reviews
And Hard Work |
The wine business is so fascinating. You meet
people from around the world that share the same passion. So often, we
look to the far reaches of the distant shore to find these gems. Recently,
I met a nice young man from Sussex County. He has been making wine with
his family since he was five years old. Over the course of the last 35
years, he has gotten pretty good.
He brought by a case of his wines to taste last week and with the
exception of one bottle that had cork taint, they were some of the best wines
that I have tasted this year. He said, "it is really hard to make good
wine." When he said that to me, I realized how hard it is to do anything
really well. The details seem overwhelming to the casual observer and I am
sure that many people would never begin such an undertaking. When I taste
wine, I rarely think about the labor, the thousands of miles it has traveled and
myriad of details involved. I am usually writing notes like: nice
aromatics, high alcohol, great value. There have been a few wines like
the "Armance B" and the Molly Dooker Maitre D.
In the blog from 2 weeks ago, I mentioned that on March 13th we will be tasting
an amazing merlot. There is no doubt in my mind that this wine has a
very unique story with layers of complexity. I have always referred to
these types of things as having sophisticated simplicity. The details are
in the background and all we see are smiling faces when the wine hits the lips.
